Boerhaavia diffusa Linn. (Punarnava) is a medicinal plant belonging to family Nyctaginaceae. It has many pharmacological activities like anti-convulsant, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic etc. Convulsion is the chronic disorder of the central nervous system manifested by recurrent unprovoked seizures. The present study was undertaken to investigate the anticonvulsant efficacy of the root extract of Boerhaavia diffusa Linn. using Maximal electroshock induced seizure(MES) in wistar albino mice. In this method, the animals were divided into four different group of six animals each. The different group were treated with different treatments and doses orally i.e. , 1% normal saline(1 mg/kg.), phenytoin(3mg/kg.), methanolic extract at high dose(1500mg/kg), methanolic extract at low dose(500mg/kg.). The methanolic extract showed significant Anticonvulsant activity at P< 0.05 by abolishing the tonic extensor phase when compared to control group. The % inhibition and % mortality were observed. The methanolic extract at dose level (1500mg/kg. p.o.) was gave 73.73% protection against the MES (maximal-electroshock) induced convulsions and 0% mortality.
